A database administrator (DBA) is responsible for the planning, maintenance and development of a database.  The work of a database administrator (DBA) will vary according to the nature of the employing organisation and the level of responsibility associated with the post. Some of the work may involve specialising in database development or pure maintenance.   Typical responsibilities could include some or all of the following:

  • Design, model, configure, test, and install databases.
  • Document database backup, recovery, capacity, and security plans.
  • Administer, maintain, and implement changes to existing databases to meet Customer requirements.
  • Respond to test and production database problems and implement immediate resolution efforts across technology areas.
  • Customer/Business Orientation:
    • Focus on internal and external Customer requirements.
    • Provide Leadership in key interactions with business Customers to define, analyze, and deliver Customer requirements.
    • Demonstrates advanced understanding of business processes being supported by assigned system(s).
    • Demonstrates proficient understanding of business processes across multiple business Customers.
  • Project Management:
    • Provide Leadership as a communications liaison between the business Customer and the technology development and support groups.
    • Develop time estimates for project schedules, monitor progress, and provide accurate and timely reports.
    • Plan and manage project activities within allocated resources.
    • Manage resolution of problems and escalate as required.
    • Work across projects to synchronize data analysis efforts and deliverables.
    • Negotiate and manage team relationships at project level.
    • Support the organization’s project management policy, practice, and methodology.
  • Problem Solving:
    • Employ productivity aids in all aspects of assignments.
    • Analyze and resolve complex or multiple problems.
    • Independently research and recommends alternative actions for problem resolution.
  • Systems Development Engineering:
    • Provide Leadership to design, create, implement, and support complex databases to meet project and system design requirements.
    • Implement complex changes to existing databases.
    • Provide Leadership for installation and configuration of new database engines and upgrades to new product releases.
    • Implement physical data models at a project, or corporate level.
    • Create, document, and administer, and document database backup and recovery plans, capacity plans and security plans to meet project requirements.
  • Testing/Deliverable Quality: Plan tests for new products and database engine releases to ensure features and functions are acceptable and integrated across systems software and platforms.
  • Production Support:
    • Analyze and resolve highly complex problems.
    • Recommend database and system management tools as required.
    • Proactively investigate/troubleshoot database, technical and systems problems and direct/assure corrective action.
    • Work with application teams to recommend process or system enhancements.
    • Provide general technical support to Services and Development groups. 24X7 duty required for on-call rotation.
  • Financial Accountability: Develop volume and cost estimates.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Minimum 10 years logical & physical data modeling for Operational Transactions and Data Warehousing Systems.
  • Minimum 10 years using SQL (DML and DDL) for any DBMS.
  • Minimum 7 years of database architecture, administration and support on large Oracle environment.
  • Minimum 3 years of working knowledge in clustered database environment.
  • Minimum 10 years Unix with strong Shell scripting skills.
  • Minimum 5 years of application development and project management on any DBMS.
  • Minimum 3 years of providing technical leadership in Oracle environment.
  • Minimum 3 years design and implement high availability, disaster recovery systems.
  • Minimum 5 years of capacity planning, product evaluation and making recommendations on database products and services.
  • Strong understanding of database concepts, architecture, processes and principles.
  • Minimum 3 years of supporting J2EE application development teams.
  • Minimum 5 years as part of team implementing solutions using a Systems Development Lifecycle Methodology.
  • Minimum 5 years gathering and documenting business requirements.
  • Minimum 5 years participating in Testing Life Cycle (Data Validation and Performance Testing).
  • Minimum 5 years demonstrated ability to conduct and/or lead discussions with Business Partners and Senior Technology Leadership.
  • Minimum 3 years of working with large technical infrastructure budget in excess of $5M.
  • Minimum 7 years demonstrated ability to work on multiple complex projects simultaneously, and success using problem-solving skills.
  • Good written, oral communication skills and ability to work in a Team environment.
  • Strong Customer service oriented and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in developing policies and procedures for database environments, defining coding standards and Service Level Agreements.
  • Preferred Skills:
    • Database administration skills on Teradata, Sybase, and MS SQL Server.
    • Experience with Oracle 10g on Linux.
    • Experience with Oracle Identity Management Solutions.
    • Experience with MS Project.
    • Experience with database tools such as: DBArtisian, HP Openview, and OEM.
    • Relational data modeling for large applications.
    • Exposure to BI and reporting tools such as Crystal, Cognos, Abinitio.
    • Minimum 2 years of Airline experience.
    • Managing Customer relationships.
    • Presentation Skills.
    • Project Management Skills.
  • Education: BS, Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, and/or equivalent formal training or work experience.
  • Experience:
    • Generally has 7 or more years (or equivalent knowledge base) work experience in Engineering and/or Information Technology – Database environment.
    • Demonstrates experience with computer/network systems/hardware and software development methodology/processes obtained through formal training, education and/or work experience.
    • Experience with design and development of multiple database engines.
    • Experience as a technical or team lead.
